ALERT: More soybean rust on soybeans, kudzu in GA, NC

10/7/2006 5:45 p.m. CDT -- Asian soybean rust has been found in two new Georgia counties and one new North Carolina county, taking the U.S. total of rust-positive counties over the 100 mark to 101 in 2006.

Two of the new find were on soybeans, so the U.S. total of counties with soybean rust on its main host is now 80. One of the new county finds was on kudzu.

Georgia:

As reported today in the Georgia state commentary on www.sbrusa.net, soybean rust was found in four counties during the week, for the first time this year in Appling (10/3) and Lee (10/4) and in additional sites in already-positive Grady (10/2) and Miller (10/4) counties.

The first site, located in Appling County, is a non-irrigated commercial soybean plot located off of Highway 1 in southeast Georgia. The soybeans were at about the R7 growth stage. Two of 108 leaflets were infected with fewer than 10 rust pustules per leaf. This is a new find in that county.

The second site, located in Grady County, is a kudzu patch that is located in the Cairo city limits (south Georgia, bordering Florida) and has been monitored all season. Five of 57 leaves were infected with fewer than 10 rust pustules per leaf. "This find came as no surprise since rust had already been confirmed on kudzu in the same county," officials said.

The third site, located in Lee County (west Georgia, and south of Sumter County), is a kudzu patch that has been monitored all season. One of 50 leaves was infected with fewer than 5 rust pustules on the leaf. This find also came as no surprise, officials said, since rust had already been confirmed on soybean at a University of Georgia sentinel plot in Sumter County. This is the first find in Lee County.

The fourth site, located in Miller County (west Georgia) is a kudzu patch that has been monitored all season. One of 50 leaves were infected with one rust pustule per leaf. This is the second find in Miller County. "It is a little surprising that rust was found this late on this site, since rust had already been confirmed on kudzu approximately one block from this site and rust had also been confirmed in the adjacent counties of Seminole and Decatur," according to the commentary.

Georgia has 15 counties in which soybean rust has been found so far this year: Appling, Brooks, Burke, Colquitt, Cook, Decatur, Grady, Lee, Miller, Seminole, Sumter, Thomas, Tift, Toombs and Washington.

North Carolina:

Soybean rust was found in one more North Carolina county the week of Oct 1-7, in the sentinel plot in Hyde County, reported in today's state commentary.

This brings to 13 the number of North Carolina counties positive for soybean rust: Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Craven, Edgecombe, Hyde, Jones, Lenoir, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland and Washington.
