ALERT: Soybean rust found in Jackson County in SE Mississippi
|
9/6/2006 3:30 p.m. CDT -- Jackson County, Mississippi, has become the 39th county in the U.S. with soybean rust this year.
Jackson is in far southeast Mississippi, adjacent to rust-infected Mobile and Baldwin counties in Alabama. The only other positive Mississippi county this year is Jefferson, on the other side of the state.
According to today's state commentary, the disease was present in an isolated area of the soybean field. Infection was not heavy and was located extremely low in the canopy. The soybeans were drying down and defoliating naturally.
Scouting will continue in the southern part of the state where scattered rain showers have occurred, the commentary said. Kudzu, sentinel plots and producer fields will be looked at intensely this next week.
Mississippi officials say that producers in the SW portion of Mississippi that have soybeans that are in reproductive growth stage R5.5 or a younger reproductive stage, need to consider application of a fungicide, particularly a triazole or a mix. Soybean growers in our major growing areas in North Mississippi and the Delta have nothing to be concerned about at this time.
It's been hot and extremely dry in those areas, unfavorable for rust development.
"Harvest is well under way in the state," the commentary said. "As of last week, we have harvested approximately 70 percent of our soybean crop. Scouting will continue, and these management suggestions will be modified based on the scouting results and weather conditions."
