Soybean rust found in two more Louisiana parishes
|
8/16/06 8:15 a.m. CDT — On August 15, Asian soybean rust (ASR) was confirmed in two additional parishes, Avoyelles and Tensas in Louisiana. This brings the total to six Louisiana parishes in which ASR has been found on either soybeans or kudzu. These finds are the first reports of rust for these counties.
On Friday, August 11, 2006, ASR was found in a sentinel plot of soybeans in Natchitoches Parish, La. The beans are Group Vs and are at R5 growth stage.
The recommendation is for soybeans in the R1 through R5 growth stages and that have a good yield potential be treated with a rust fungicide.
Currently rust has been found on this year's soybeans in twelve different counties in five states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi), the rest of the finds have been on kudzu. A total of 32 counties have reported rust this year and include five in Alabama, 13 in Florida, six in Georgia, six in Louisiana, one in Texas, and one in Mississippi. Spore trapping continues throughout the U.S. using both active and passive traps. Any positive spore trap information does not imply infection has taken place and plant samples are used exclusively for recording positive rust occurrence. Dry to very dry conditions have prevailed in the spore source regions and movement to new areas has been slow.
