ALERT: Iberia Parish, LA, soybean rust find in kudzu second in state

7/10/2006 6:45 a.m. CDT -- Late Friday, Louisiana officials turned Iberia Parish red on the USDA map after finding Asian soybean rust in kudzu for the second time in seven days. Rust at both sites is sporulating heavily.

There are now 24 counties in five U.S. states to have confirmed soybean rust this year.

Iberia Parish touches the southeast corner of Lafayette Parish, where rust was found on kudzu June 30. The new find is about five miles from that first confirmed site, according to Clayton A. Hollier, Louisiana State University plant pathologist.

Neither parish had soybean rust last year -- the only rust in Louisiana in 2005 was in two parishes to the northeast, in East Baton Rouge Parish (10/28) and Tangipahoa Parish (11/30).

In Friday's July 7 commentary, officials said "Several leaves in a confined, shady area were found to have pustules. Sporulation at this site and the one found in Lafayette Parish on June 30 are both sporulating heavily. Three generations of pustules can be found at each location.

"At the Lafayette site, spread of disease is occurring in the kudzu," the commentary said. "New lesions were found today (July 7) in areas previously absent of disease. No ASR has been found on soybeans!" (Emphasis theirs.)

Louisiana has not changed its recommendation on management, still saying, "Although ASR is present on kudzu, there is no need to activate rust control measures at this time, although this could change very quickly if rust is found in commercial soybean fields." The full management commentary is at www.sbrusa.net.

As for crop conditions, the commentary said that the most advanced soybean stage is R7 in the south-central part of the state (Avoyelles Parish). "Rains during the last few days have been helpful in relieving the drought stress in most of the state although many areas could use more rain."

Louisiana is also providing rust information via the soybean rust portions of the AgCenter's Web site and on the Asian Soybean Rust Hotline at 1-800-516-0865.
