ALERT: Soybean rust found today in Lanier County, GA, field
9/20/2005 -- 3:30 p.m. CDT -- A sample from a commercial soybean field in Lanier County, Georgia, was confirmed as positive for soybean rust today. The state now has 18 positive counties, and the United States has 60 counties with rust in 2005.

Layla Sconyers, plant pathologist research assistant at the University of Georgia, updated the Georgia state commentary with the news this afternoon. No other details were provided on the find other than the sample was confirmed at the UGA diagnostic clinic in Tifton, Ga.

Lanier County is a small county centered along the southern edge of the state, just east of a grouping of six counties already positive for soybean rust.
