FL posts photos of new soybean rust on kudzu in Jefferson County

6/16/2005 – 3:45 p.m. CDT Update -- Florida has posted online photos of the newest soybean-rust-infected kudzu site and a sample leaf, along with close-up images of the rust pustules and a representative spore. The site is a roadside kudzu patch in Jefferson County in north-central Florida. The photos were taken by various Univ. of Florida personnel on June 14 and 15, 2005.

New positive soybean-rust find in fifth FL county: Jefferson

6/15/2005 – 8 p.m. CDT – According to a late-day update to the USDA soybean rust national commentary, Asian soybean rust has been found in Jefferson County, Florida -- now the fifth rust-infected county in the state identified in 2005.

While the Florida state commentary on www.sbrusa.net is not yet updated, the Florida Asian Soybean Rust Site notice specified that the detection is on kudzu leaves and was confirmed by three different means: microscopy by the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences; enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) by UF/Plant Pathology; and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by the UF/Plant Disease Clinic. The Florida Web site report said the site is limited in size at less than one-fourth of an acre.

The PCR test is a laboratory test that matches the precise DNA sequence of a pathogen or other organism – the most definitive test for Asian soybean rust.

Jefferson County is one county east of Tallahassee’s home county (Leon) in north-central Florida. That's just south across the border (and two counties east) from Seminole County, Georgia, where rust has been found in two locations on volunteer soybeans. Monticello, Fla., is the Jefferson County seat.

According to the map of Florida Soybean Rust Monitoring Zones and Survey Sites, there is one sentinel site/primary location in Jefferson County. It's not clear from the information available at this time if the kudzu site is in or near that location.

For more details on what Florida scouts are finding (including photos of downy mildew-infected leaves from sentinel plots, etc.) see these Field Observations (click link by that name at top of page or just scroll down).

Here is the full USDA Public Soybean Rust National Map Commentary, updated for the second time today, 6/15/2005:

Jefferson County, Florida, reported a new find of soybean rust on kudzu. This is the fifth county in Florida that has reported soybean rust, though all are on kudzu. Seminole County in Georgia remains the only county with rust on soybean - and it was found on volunteer soybean plants in two locations.

Numerous fields have been scouted from Kansas to Delaware and from Florida to North Dakota and Canada. Potential new infections could occur on non-soybean or soybean plants in the Southeast.

The impact of (tropical storm) Arlene will not be known for 7 to 14 days. Additional spore monitoring through spore traps and ground observations of soybean and other hosts will indicate whether Arlene played a role in movement of rust spores.
