ALERT: Tennessee finds first soybean rust of 2007
|
10/8/2007 11 a.m. CDT -- Tennessee officials found Asian soybean rust in Gibson County in western Tennessee last week -- the first in the state this year.

"On Friday, Oct. 5, Asian soybean rust was confirmed in Gibson County at the University of Tennessee Milan Research and Education Center on leaves collected on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from soybean plants that were approximately GS R7.
"The disease samples -- a few rust pustules -- were found on soybean leaves and visually identified with a microscope at the UT Extension lab at Jackson on Friday. The samples were then tested with the "QuickStix" method by Melvin Newman, UT Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology, in Jackson.
"The leaves are undergoing final confirmation that the pustules are Asian soybean rust by PCR testing in Dr. Kurt Lamour's lab at the UT Institute of Agriculture in Knoxville.
"Because this Tennessee find has occurred at the end of the growing season when most soybeans are nearing maturity and many have already been harvested, the current recommendation by Dr. Melvin Newman is that there is NO NEED to apply a fungicide treatment."
Tennessee is the 16th state to find soybean rust this year. There have been 169 counties and parishes with soybean rust in 2007.
