ALERT: First soybean rust of 2007 found in SW Arkansas

7/23/2007 6:20 p.m. CDT -- Asian soybean rust was confirmed in commercial soybeans in southwest Arkansas today -- the first in the state this year. Growers in that corner of the state are advised to spray soybeans in growth stages R1 to R6 as soon as possible.

The rust was found at low incidence (<1%-2%) on the lower leaves, less than 1% severity, in the southeastern part of Little River County, officials said. The location is due north of Texarkana and four counties east of Fannin and Hunt counties in Texas, where rust was found late last week.

Scott Monfort, Extension plant pathologist from the University of Arkansas, found the rust with colleague Cliff Coker, and put this information on the state's soybean rust hotline (1-866-641-1847 - press 1 for Arkansas) today:

They are confident they found the soybean rust pustules early, as indicated by the low incidence and severity. They are recommending that growers with soybeans in the R1 to R6 stages in the southwest corner of the state only spray as soon as possible with a combination of a strobilurin and a triazole fungicide. The southwest corner is defined, for this spray recommendation, by a line from Arkadelphia, Ark., in the north to El Dorado in the south over to the Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana borders.

Monfort said that they do NOT recommend fungicide treatment at this time for areas outside the southwest corner, for soybeans beyond R6 or for soybeans still in the vegetative (pre-bloom) stages until they reach the R1 stage.

Fields that are treated should be monitored and checked again in 10 days. If rust is present, a second application is recommended.

This find brings the number of U.S. states with soybean rust this year to seven, in 43 counties and parishes.
