First soybean rust of year in Mississippi; more rust in Texas
|
7/12/2007 3:35 p.m. CDT -- Asian soybean rust has been confirmed on kudzu in Mississippi and in a sentinel plot and the surrounding commercial soybean field in Victoria County, Texas.
The Mississippi find is the first in the state this year. Infection is low to moderate, and sporulation is light, officials said in the state commentary on the USDA Pest Information Platform for Extension and Education.
Fungicide recommendations have been made for a four-county area around Wilkinson County.
In Texas, rust has been found on soybeans in a sentinel plot and the surrounding commercial soybean field in Victoria County. Preliminary scouting indicates that rust is also present in other fields in the area, including other nearby counties, officials said in the Texas state commentary.
Victoria is on the Gulf Coast of Texas, about midway between the rust-positive counties of Hidalgo and Liberty counties.
Texas officials said fields in the Upper Coast counties, including Calhoun, Victoria, Jackson, Wharton, Colorado and Fort Bend are at high risk for rust development, the commentary said, and a preventative fungicide application is advised if these fields are not at R6.
There are 30 total counties and parishes in six states with soybean rust in 2007. By state, the counts are FL 10, AL 5, GA 5, LA 5, TX 4, MS 1.
