ALERT: Soybean rust found in commercial field in SE Texas

UPDATE 6/23/2007 12:15 p.m. CDT -- Asian soybean rust was found in a commercial soybean field Wednesday in Cameron County, Texas, just outside Brownsville on the border with Mexico.

This is the second instance of rust in commercial soybeans in the state this year, and the farthest north rust has been found in the state.

According to the Texas state commentary and soybean specialist Tom Isakeit, soybean rust was found June 20 in a 40-acre commercial soybean field two miles from the Brownsville city limit and a quarter mile from the Rio Grande River. The incidence was 5 percent of leaves with rust and 0.5 percent severity. The soybeans are at R5 to R6.

Officials said this field had been scouted in 2005 and 2006 with no finding of rust. Three fields of commercial soybeans within about two miles of each other near Monte Alto (Hidalgo County) are the only other infected sites in the state, Isakeit said. All the affected fields are at R5 to R6.

So far in 2007, the 27 U.S. counties and parishes with soybean rust confirmed are in FL (10), AL (5), GA (5), LA (4), TX (3).
