ALERT: Soybean rust found on commercial soybeans in S. Texas
|
6/15/2007 11:45 a.m. CDT -- Texas officials report a low incidence of Asian soybean rust found in two commercial soybean fields during a field day in Hidalgo County in south Texas.
The incidence was low, less than 1 percent of lower leaves, the state commentary said. Both fields are at R5 to R6. Commercial soybean crops in south Texas are flowering to full pod, so many fields are no longer vulnerable to yield loss to rust, it said.
Last year, soybean rust was found in a late-planted soybean field in Hidalgo County on Feb. 14. The field was harvested soon after.
Earlier this year, rust was again detected in old-crop and volunteer commercial soybeans in a Hidalgo County field. The county was declared "confirmed, no longer found" on March 15 after the field was harvested.
Texas officials say it is hot and dry in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and the rust is not likely to greatly increase. Rust has not been found in other areas of Texas.
"Some fields in the Lower Rio Grande Valley may be threatened, although the hot, dry weather there is not conducive to rust development," the commentary said. "The farmers of these fields were present when the rust was detected (it was during a field day), so they will be looking for rust."
Officials are not recommending fungicide applications in other parts of Texas at this time.
