ALERT: New soybean rust on kudzu found in LA next to soybean field

6/6/2007 7:30 a.m. CDT -- Louisiana officials have found Asian soybean rust in kudzu only 30 feet from a soybean field in St. Mary Parish. This is the 24th rust-positive U.S. parish or county this year.

"This kudzu was being observed very carefully due to its proximity to a soybean field," officials said.

In the same Louisiana state commentary yesterday, the officials reported that the rust infection in Iberia Parish has grown from the 10-foot-diameter spot of kudzu found May 11 to an area 200 to 250 feet in diameter as of June 5. Sampling at the initial site revealed 11 of 14 sampling sites within that 250 ft were positive for Asian soybean rust.

The soybean sentinel plots in Louisiana have been planted, with growth stages ranging from late vegetative stages to R4. Continued scattered showers have occurred lately. Although no other ASR has been found in Louisiana, conditions are favorable for rust development, officials said.

Kudzu sites where ASR was known to occur during 2006 continue to be scouted and the 2007 soybean sentinel plots are being scouted each week. ASR was found on May 8th, 53 days ahead of the first observation last year. Scouting continues in all areas of the state.
