Pioneer Hi-Bred researcher gives tips for monitoring soybean rust
7/7/2008 9:30 a.m. CDT DES MOINES -- After three complete growing seasons of Asian soybean rust in the U.S., there are signs the disease can potentially expand northward, and experts with Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, recommend growers closely monitor soybean fields for any signs of the disease.

  • 7/19/2008 6:30 p.m. CDT -- ALERT: Soybean rust found again in St. Mary Parish, LA on kudzu, 7/17. Total counties and parishes with rust in 2008: 22 in six U.S. states; five municipalities in three Mexican states.
  • 7/9/2008 10:30 p.m. CDT -- ALERT: Two new Florida counties have soybean rust: Hamilton and Columbia on the border with Georgia, on kudzu, found 7.8. FL officials say frequent rains may make rust more important in the state this year vs. last year with the spring drought.

  • USDA Observation Map 7/19/2008 -- Red counties are positive for rust. Latest is rust was reported once again on kudzu in St. Mary's Parish in LA, 7/17. Total counties and parishes with rust in 2008: 22 in six U.S. states -- AL 1, FL 13, GA 1, LA 3, MS 1, TX 3; five municipalities in three Mexican states -- Taumaulipas 3, Veracruz-Llave 1.


    Tropical Weather: 7/19 6:20 p.m. CDT: Tropical Storm Cristobal is strengthening off the S.C. coast, moving NE near 7 mph from its position 125 E. of Charleston. The center of the storm is expected to move parallel and very close to the Carolina coasts today and Sunday.

  • USDA SBR forecast, issued 7/18: For 7/19-20 -- High pressure will move in behind the low as it moves northward along the Carolina coast, bringing only isolated showers to N and C FL. High pressure in the Southeast will allow for partly to mostly sunny skies over the weekend.
    Risk Area: Winds from the south will allow the risk for transport north of spore sites; however, lack of rainfall will hinder spore deposition and survival. There is a chance for isolated showers in FL; however, mostly sunny skies will keep the risk of spore deposition and survival to a minimum.
